In 1987, foreseeing changing technology in the satellite TV industry, EchoStar Communications Corporation filed for a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) license with the FCC. Since, EchoStar has launched 14 satellites, with the capacity to offer over 2,700 digital video, data and audio channels of programming including local networks and HDTV. After the separation of DISH Network and EchoStar, DISH Network retained six satellites – five owned and one leased.
